There still may be no real news on an Evil Dead remake or sequel, but that doesn’t stop Sam Raimi’s business partner from sharing news that suggests its not completely dead. But its not alive either.
[Raimi’s] business partner Rob Tapert claimed recently that he’s looking at a script for what would be either a reboot or a fourth installment in the franchise. The money quote: “What’s interesting about Evil Dead is very few people saw it in the format we made it for, which is for the theater… I think Sam wants to embrace the ultimate experience in grueling terror and see it remade for a proper theatrical experience.”
Granted with the film’s Cult Status, Evil Dead has been a favourite of arthouse theaters and special screenings, so I don’t know that his statement is entirely true. Maybe he is talking about first run? There are scattered opportunities for any die hard to see this in a theater setting. Personally I have never seen the movie on the big screen and I am a fan of the film, and have two versions in my collection.
Now before we toss around the idea of Evil Dead as a reboot or sequel, consider that Evil Dead 2 was essentially a reboot of the first film anyways. So if it is a fourth, would it be a fan tribute with Bruce Campbell returning to quip some clever quotable lines?
Or do they reboot it as a more serious gritty attempt at horror using the same themes of the Book of the Dead and the unwitting campers in a remote cabin facing the supernatural.
But at the end of the day, this is just more of the same “it could be happening” news we have been hearing for a while, and not conclusive of progress.
