So the Weinsteins bought the rights to the huge Chinese movie The Promise and then there was scary talk that the Weinsteins had decided to request huge cuts in the movie to make it more acceptable to the US audience (I think that means dumbing down) well now word is that they are scrapping the idea of releasing it at all!
According to The Hollywood Reporter the rights have reverted back and although it will still complete its short US run for the Oscars it won’t get a proper release just yet.
“Promise,” which is China’s submission in the foreign language Academy Award category, still will open as scheduled Friday at the Laemmle Fairfax 3 in Los Angeles for a one-week Oscar-qualifying run so that it also will be eligible in other categories, producer Etchie Stroh said. Beyond that, Stroh said, he plans to meet with other distributors next week in hopes of securing a new North American distributor. Both sides said that the decision to part ways was amicable.
Sure it was, nothing to do with the Weinsteins trying to cut the movie to shreds!
