Rumor: DJ Caruso may direct Preacher

Slash Film is reporting that director DJ Caruso, (Disturbia; I am number four), is in talks to helm the film adaptation of Garth Ennis’ popular Preacher comic book.

In September producer Moretz told Total Film Magazine that “Another unnamed director has apparently signed on.” We haven’t had any leads on this until today. One of my well placed Hollywood spys informs me that Disturbia/Eagle Eye helmer DJ Caruso is in talks to direct a big screen adaptation of Preacher. This is said to be all dependent on the box office of his latest film, I Am Number Four.

Preacher has had the “almost” curse for a long time. The movie has a long documented history of “almost” entering production several times throughout its inception, with this rumor adding another chapter to this story.

I love the idea of comic book movies becoming so popular as just about any comic property with a decent fan base having its rights bought out to be made into a movie. What I don’t like is when these rights are bought and not used, for whatever reason, basically putting the movie out of reach to ever be developed. This has been the case with a ton of comic book properties over the years with some favorites of mine sitting in limbo. I’ll try to keep an eye out for any news about this movie but given the subject matter I wouldn’t be surprised if it might be a while.
