The Adult Video News Awards are the Adult Industry equivalent of the Oscars in mainstream cinema, and they were handed out in a ceremony in Las Vegas last night.
Interesting, according to Reuters through Cinematical, the industry has been out performing mainstream cinema.
Adult entertainment, including porn videos and films shot mainly in Southern California’s San Fernando Valley, racked up estimated sales of $12.6 billion in 2005, according to statistics compiled by AVN.
That compared with U.S. theatrical revenue of $8.9 billion for mainstream Hollywood films, according to figures from box office tracking firm Exhibitor Relations.
However we have to be somewhat trusting on the figures as the Adult Industry do not disclose either revenue or production costs so it’s hard to know what sort of profit is made outside of the Industry. Personally I think that’s because they make films for next to nothing (compared to Hollywood’s inflated costs and salaries) and make huge amounts of profit on them.
Best Picture went to a remake, would you believe it, The New Devil in Miss Jones! The irony!
Jenna Jameson was inducted into the AVN Hall of Fame, as was Larry Flynt for his work for free speech in the Industry.
The full awards listing is over at the AVN Awards site and includes all the categories you would see in the Oscars as well as some more…well…adult ones! Interestingly they have awards for such things as Best Marketing (both online and overall campaign), Best Retail Website and awards for Best DVD for Interactive, Classic and even Extras and Menus!
Are these some of the categories that should be considered for the mainstream Oscars? DVD Oscars at least?
