This is only surprising to those unfamiliar with the production process of mega franchises like Spider-Man, but THR is reporting that Sony has already given Jame Vanderbilt the green light to start working on the sequel before they’ve even wrapped filming on the first one.

James Vanderbilt, who penned Amazing, will be back behind the keyboard for the continuation of the new movie franchise.
Vanderbilt had a meeting with the Spider-Man filmmakers and studio execs yesterday outlining his take, getting a thumbs up, and will now begin writing.
Vanderbilt has become part of the Spider-Man family at Columbia, which has enjoyed great success with a tightknit group of creative people. Vanderbilt first worked on Spider-Man 4 for the studio, back when Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire were planning to continue the series.
This news is very unsurprising as I’m sure they’d like to keep things moving smoothly at Sony before Marvel and Disney re-think this whole thing with Sony handling their flagship comic character. I’m still looking forward to the eventual release of the Amazing Spider-Man and I hope by the time I walk out the theater I look back at this news piece with more excitement.
