Kenneth Branagh will NOT direct Thor 2

Thor 2 is coming. Was there ever any doubt? The 1st movie has made mucho moola internationally and it hasn’t even been released on DVD yet. No, no that was probably only our first taste in what will assuredly last for many years to come. What won’t happen is Kenneth Branagh returning in the directors chair for the next entry in the Thor franchise.

Marvel Studios, which is in production on the Joss Whedon-directed The Avengers, is making a full commitment to Thor 2, with Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as the title hero. Marvel will need to hire a director for that film because, I’ve learned, Kenneth Branagh won’t be returning as helmer.

At least they shared when we will next see our favorite Asgardian on the silver screen.

UPDATE: Disney has set a July 26, 2013 release date for Thor 2.

No Ken Bran? And here I thought that dude did a great job directing Thor! It wasn’t a perfect movie by any means, but what comic movie is? I think it’s a bit disappointing to hear about his departure but I’m also very excited about the idea of a another director getting his hands on this property. But I think I’m gonna take my time and think long and hard before I decide who I’d like to see take on the job. Thor’s not an easy sell.

Also, Marvel wants to continue this trend of multiple Marvel Studios releases per year. That may not be a problem for me, but I wonder if they may be a teetering a bit on the line of “over saturation” for the mainstream audience. I think they will do well to continue with these near summer/summer release schedule just to play things safe, how about you?
