The early American Dreamz reviews are out… and damn I’m disappointed. They’re much lower than what I was expecting. I had 3 things in this movie that made me think it would rate higher. 1) Hugh Grant – I think the man is amazing. 2) Dennis Quaid – Really underrated actor. 3) The idea of looking at how screwed up North American culture has become when more of us vote for the new “American Idol” than we do for our government. YIKES!
But alas… the American Dreamz reviews are in… and they are not pretty. Here is what some critics had to say in their American Dreamz reviews:
“Comes across like a bad ‘Saturday Night Live’ political sketch, dragged on for way too long … a lot of great talent wasted.”
Edward Douglas, COMINGSOON.NET“Any attempt to defend American Dreamz for its political venom, or for the surfeit of its surreal conceits, is doomed to founder on a single, obstructive fact: this picture ain’t funny.”
Anthony Lane, NEW YORKER“So do you think the war on terror is one big joke? … Even if you do, this is comedy that, for all its heavy-handed political satire, just isn’t funny.”
Steve Rhodes, INTERNET REVIEWS“Its shallow cynicism combined with its faith that everything will turn out okay can even be said to breed complacency — the opposite of what satire needs to do in these increasingly dark days.”
David Edelstein, NEW YORK MAGAZINE
AS of this moment, American Dreamz is holding a sad 35% over at Rottentomatoes. I was really hoping for better. Watch for my review this weekend.
