Found this news item over at The Guardian:

“According to the Department of Homeland Security Richard Kelly, director of ‘Donnie Darko’ could be a suspected terrorist who may now be prevented from travelling to Cannes next week. Kelly, 31, appears caught in bureaucratic limbo after his passport was reportedly “held under review” by the US government. Sources suggest that the film-maker has been confused with another man, “James Kelly”, who is on the terrorist watch list. Kelly’s full name is James Richard Kelly.”

“His latest picture, ‘Southland Tales’, is set in a dystopian Los Angeles paralysed by economic and environmental collapse. Ironically, the film is implicitly concerned with security measures taken by the US government after the events of September 11 2001. “The paranoid conspiracy freak inside me is starting to think this has something to do with the film,” Kelly admitted yesterday. In the meantime he has enlisted his mother to hunt for documents that prove his American citizenship.”

Maybe Kelly, who also wrote last year’s ‘Domino’ could whip up a sequel to ‘Southland’ very soon…

But the film itself has gotten little attention at he Movie Blog, despite it being Kelly’s sophmore effort as a writer-director. Why? I think it has to do with the fact that the film was filmed in a month on an indie budget. What is ‘Southland’ about?

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson stars as Boxer Santaros, an action star stricken with amnesia whose life intertwines with Krysta Now (Sarah Michelle Gellar), an adult film star developing her own reality television project, and David Clark (Seann William Scott), a Hermosa Beach police officer who holds the key to a vast conspiracy.

Other supporting roles roles are filled by Christopher Lambert, Kevin Smith, Bai Ling, Janeane Garofalo, Cheri Oteri, Justin Timberlake, and Jon Lovitz, among others.. This sounds like a hoot.
