The whole idea of Clerks 2 has been a double edged sword for most of the Clerks fans. On the one hand they’ve been excited as hell to see Clerks 2… but on the other hand there seems to be this sense of dread… a sense of “Oh no… what if this ruins everything”. It’s an understandable fear considering how often sequels ruin things.
However Clerks fans… hold your heads up high. Apparently the films debut at the Cannes Film Festival was an outstanding success. The good folks over at Cinematical give us the following:
Harvey Weinstein outsmarted everyone by debuting the film at snooty Cannes rather than at Sundance, where it has its roots? Director Kevin Smith reports on View Askew that the film received an eight minute — EIGHT minute — standing ovation following its midnight screening at the world’s most famous film festival. Smith says he was understandably nervous, given the vicious critical reaction to some Cannes films, but lucky for him, the audience apparently either really dug it, or they were really intoxicated and would have applauded You’ve Got Mail.
That’s the part that really gets me. The festival this year has been BRUTAL on movies… and yet Clerks 2 get the big Huzzaa. Cool. I’ll be ready to see this thing opening day with my mp3 player to listen to Smith’s commentary.
