The Passion of the Christ – Most Controversial Film Of All Time

The Passion of the ChristOne of my favorite magazines (yeah, I still actually read one or two of those) Entertainment Weekly, is putting out a list in their upcoming June 16th issue on “The Top 25 Most Controversial Films Of All Time”. I like “list” articles, they’re always good food for discussion.

According to the good folks at the Associated Press, the #1 film on the list was Mel Gibson’s hit film “The Passion Of The Christ”.

Now, the criteria for making the list is: “the 25 films that have most shocked, disgusted and divided moviegoers”

Ok, now here’s the thing. I really don’t like how EW is defining “controversial” at all here. How is shock and Disgust controversy??? From my understanding of the word, how can Fahrenheit 9/11 (no matter which side you take on it) not be considered the #1 most controversial film of all time?!?! Now THAT was controversy!

Yeah, so to me, the whole “list” is sort of a let down right from the get go because I just don’t agree with how they’re defining the whole question. Anyway, you can see the article with the other 24 items on the list here.

Your thoughts?
