Before becoming the new king of Hollywood comedy, Vince Vaughn was groomed to be a big leading man in the dramatic area of films. He had modest success in those projects, but not much.
Vince obviously went on to find his true calling, as a brilliant comedic actor. As my Audio Edition co-host Doug Nagy once said “He’s the new Oprah for men”. and it’s true. That’s why I find this news from the good folks over at Dark Horizons so confusing:
“Crash” helmer Paul Haggis is lining up Vince Vaughn (“Wedding Crashers”, “The Break-Up”) to star in Sony Pictures political drama “Against All Enemies” reports the trades. Based on Richard Clarke’s inside-Washington memoir, the book chronicles how the Bush administration handled the al-Qaida threat both before and after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Sean Penn is also in the film (surprise surprise). Look, I’m not saying Vaughn isn’t a decent dramatic actor… he is. I’m not saying a performer shouldn’t have the right to spread their creative wings… they can. But this is a road Vaughn has been down before already… and it’s didn’t work out nearly as well as his current path.
I’m also not saying Vaughn should never do drama again… but I find the timing a bit puzzling. He really is on the cusp of dominating comedy in Hollywood right now. One or 2 more hit comedies and he’s immortalized. How do you think the general movie going audience will respond to Vaughn in such a heavy themed drama?
