Disney Cutting Film Production By More Than Half

What’s this? An actual sane, responsible and correct decision by Disney? This can’t be right… no… no… there it is right there. It IS a good move by Disney! Wow.

According to Yahoo News, Disney is about to announce that they are going to be cutting WAY back on the amount of films they produce. Going from 18 films a year, down to just 8 films. That’s a HUGE cut. And you know what… it’s a smart move.

Cutting back productions will allow Disney be far more focused on each individual project, it deepens the talent (not actors) pool on which each project can draw from and hopefully it means that the 10 worst ideas on their list now won’t get made. Fantastic!

With more time, energy, focus and resources devoted to just 8 films, I believe they stand to make much better movies, and ultimately much more money. But there is another benefit to their cut back as well…

With Disney taking up 10 less spots on the wide release rotation, perhaps this will mean some other high quality projects by other studios or independent film companies without as much money for marketing can get attention without having to fight against the giant Disney marketing machine. I’m not saying that’s what WILL happen, but it could be one of the other up sides to this story.

Either way, for Disney this is a smart, responsible and “big picture” move on their part. I slam Disney all the time for their stupidity… so big props to them on making a wise move.
