Matthew Vaughn Officially On To Direct Thor

Thor-NewWe first mentioned the fact that Matthew Vaughn was going to be the new director for Thor two months ago, but now it appears it has been made official. The man who was originally supposed to direct X-Men 3, directed Layer Cake, the upcoming Stardust and partnered a couple of times with Guy Ritchie has been officially given the nod to direct the comic book adaptation.

I was quite disappointed when Vaughn dropped out of X-Men 3, and to this day he’s never really given a believable answer as to why… and I guess we’ll never know. Stardust is looking wonderful so far (I can’t wait to see it) and with him now accepting the job for Thor, I’ve got to wonder if somewhere deep down he doesn’t regret walking from X-3 and wants to jump on that Comic bandwagon again.

Still… as good of a choice as I think Vaughn is to direct… my opinion of a Thor comic movie hasn’t changed. This isn’t a good idea. Thor is a lame comic book character, and translating that character to the screen will look nothing short of Valhalla sized ridiculous. Unless major changes are made to both the look, and character of Thor (which will royally piss off the comic fans), it just won’t work on screen. That’s my opinion anyway.

The guys at AICN have this synopsis of the script:

Anyway – I sat down and dove into the script. This isn’t a Donald Blake, doctor on vacation story. Instead, this is a genuine TALES OF ASGARD story. In the first few pages the creation of everything takes place… the origin of the gods, their universe and how midgard (that’s are place in the universe) came to be.

It has Thor and Loki as brothers – the best of friends… and it shows how that goes bad. The origin of the uru hammer, Thor being thrown from Asgard to being a mere mortal… it’s a HUGE story – easily the most awesome script that a MARVEL project has ever had.

Harry’s enthusiasm not withstanding… I still think this is just a silly idea and will flop. I thought the same thing about Catwoman and Elektra and was right. However, I also initially thought the same thing about Iron Man, and they’ve won me over… so we’ll have to wait and see.
