A little while back when I was a guest on the set of the new “Midnight Meat Train” set (based on the Clive Barker short story), I had a chance to chat with Barker’s assistant who told me that a Hellraiser remake was definitely going ahead. We haven’t really heard much about it since then… ok we haven’t heard ANYTHING about it since then. Until today.
Sounds like a Hellraiser remake isn’t so certain after all. The good folks over at Moviehole give us this:
Creator Clive Barker tells Aint it Cool News that nobody seems to know whether Pinhead will return to the silver screen or not. “I have waited for a long time to see somebody give me a clue. You know, “Are we doing this or are we not doing this?” “Is it happening or is it not happening?” Nobody seems to know and I’m not going to hold my breath while I wait, because it’s frustrating”, says Barker. “I’m very lucky, I’ve got control over a lot of my artistic life. I’ve got control over my movies. I’ve got control over my books. I’m sorry, I don’t have control over my movies, but I do have control of my paintings and of my books.”
Hellraiser is a good candidate for a remake, especially if it’s under Clive Barker’s direction or control. However… I’ve always thought it might be a bit too early for a remake. The original only came out in 1987… the movie doesn’t really look all that dated. Other than the fact that it would re-introduce Pinhead to a new generation (which is a good reason on it’s own admittedly), i don’t think it would hurt to wait another 5-10 years before doing it.
