’50 Shades of Grey’ movie now has a screenwriter

The popular erotic novel “50 Shades of Grey” has a lot of buzz surrounding it. So much that there has been talkv from various media outlets about adapting the novel to film. Now it looks like the film is making its steps towards becoming a reality by signing screenwriter Kelly Marcel to adapt the novel into a feature film.

“50 Shades of Grey” moved one step closer to its big-screen adaptation Monday with Universal Pictures and its subsidiary Focus Features announcing the hiring of Kelly Marcel to adapt the bestseller into a feature film.

Marcel, 38, is best known for writing the spec script “Saving Mr. Banks,” which landed on the Black List in 2011 and is now being turned into a feature film starring Tom Hanks for Universal Pictures.

So the screenwriter is a bit of a mystery but fresh blood is sometimes a good thing with a controversial film such as this. I haven’t read the novel but I received a summation from my girlfriend and the events in this book are a bit more than risque, it is practically fetish porn. I don’t see a PG-13 rating being anywhere close to this film and I’m also having my doubts with a ‘R’ rating due to the explicit nature of the novel. I am thinking that this could be the next Hollywood hit with a NC-17 rating. I have seen more people with this book in their hand than ‘Twilight’ and ‘Hunger Games’ combined, so the fan base is going to be there no matter what. I am very curious as to how they will market and release this film. If they exclude a lot of the graphic sexual elements, they will be eliminating the controversial nature of the book that attracted the readers, and if they don’t they will be stuck with a film that may be classified as perverse and possibly not even make the ‘R’ rating.
