There is word flying around this morning that actor James McAvoy has landed the coveted role of James Montgomery Scott (AKA Scotty) on the upcoming Star Trek film. The folks over at RopeOfSilicon give us this:
The 28-year-old actor has won the role of chief engineer of the Starship Enterprise, immortalised in Captain Kirk’s phrase “Beam me up, Scotty”, reports the site, confirming McAvoy will play Scotty as a young man.
Now McAvoy was just excellent in The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe last year as the charming Mr. Tummis, and he was even better in The Last King of Scotland (his performance in that film gets seriously overlooked because of Forest Whitaker’s performance of a lifetime in the same movie). So if this rumor is true…. then it’s solid news for Star Trek fans.
The only problem is that the rumor seems to has originated from the UK tabloid the Sunday Mirror, which is not exactly the most reliable source to say the least. So take this one with a serious grain of Scotty sized salt before getting either too excited or too upset about it.
