Last week I did a post about one of my favorite all time movies The Dirty Dozen. It appears that Zak Penn has decided to hit the drawing board and try his hand at a remake of the film. We get the news from our friends at movieweb:
Writer-director Zak Penn is rewriting a remake of The Dirty Dozen for Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver, according to Variety.
The original film was released in 1967 and starred Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine and Charles Bronson.
I am certainly concerned and confused at this news. This is a movie that should not be remade in my humble opinion. It is a classic, and it is magnificent. I have plodded on and on about how I dislike remakes so I am sure my opinion is no surprise. I would like to think that movies like The Dirty Dozen would be off limits, out of respect for the original.
I only hope the remake turns out to be something like Cronenberg’s The Fly. That was a remake that was great and was very enjoyable to watch. If Penn and crew can put together a movie that is flawless then I will certainly not be upset. The problem is that most remakes are just downright horrible when compared to the original film and I do not want The Dirty Dozen to be the title of a shit movie scaring a new generation of people away from viewing the original.
