The Mystery Of “Cloverfield”

For those of you who have seen Transformers already… you’ll probably know what I’m talking about. One of the trailers before Transformers show a going away party for a guy in New York City. There are a bunch of people at the party generally having a good time. The whole trailer is shot from personal handycams of people recording the going away party (Apparently, this whole movie is going to be shot that way… kinda like Blair Witch).

Then, all of a sudden there is a massive BOOM! The party goers run to the roof fo the building to see what’s going on, only to see a HUGE fireball explosion happen in the distance of downtown New York followed by an erie roar. Another boom is heard and the head of the Statue of Liberty comes and lands at the foot of the building.

The trailer ends with nothing but a January 2008 date and “Produced by JJ Abrams”. No title is gives and no other details are revealed.

For now, this mystery film is going by the code name “Cloverfiled”. These ofther details come from our friends over at Slashfilm:

AICN reports that long time Abrams collaborator Drew Godard (Lost, Alias, Angel, Buffy) wrote the script which will be directed by Matt Reeves. Reeves was a writer on the Abrams helmed Felicity, where he also directed five episodes. Reeves also directed the pilot episodes of Miracles and Conviction. His only feature film credit is the horrible 1996 David Schwimmer/Gwyneth Paltrow romantic comedy The Pallbearer. He was also the screenwriter on Under Siege 2, Future Shock, and The Yards. So far all we know is that the whole film is shot with consumer handheld video cameras, and involves a “parasite” monster invasion in New York City.

The trailer is just terrific… and if the idea of all the ambiguity was to get me hyper interested in the project… then they’ve accomplished it in spades! So what is this mystery “Cloverfield”? I’ve got 2 theories right now (both of which are just wild speculation):

1) A new Godzilla film – Unlikely, but I heard Abrams once talk about how much he loves Godzilla

2) An American Version of The Host – This is more likely, however the sheer size that the monster would have to be to make an explosion like the one in the trailer… not to mention rip off the head of the Statue of Liberty would be MUCH larger than the monster in The Host.

So those are my two theories… both with big holes in them… but it’s all I’ve got right now. Now I’m frigging curious as hell!
