The man that brought us Wild Hogs has teamed up with Disney to bring us a movie about a Samurai Servant. We get the scoop from the news masters at Variety:
“Wild Hogs” director Walt Becker has inked a first-look deal at Disney to develop projects to direct and produce.
First up is the comic pitch “My Samurai,” with Matt Lopez to pen the script. Becker will direct, and he will produce with Mandeville partners David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman.Story concerns an American who, while on a business trip to Japan, saves the life of a homeless man who claims he’s the last in a long line of samurai. The businessman’s life is turned upside down when the so-called samurai shows up on his doorstep, pledging eternal service and loyalty.
Wild Hogs is a movie that I have no love for. Because of this, I have little love for Becker. I may be judging the man for no good reason, and that is something that I can live with. What cannot be ignored is how successful Wild Hogs was at the box office. This equals work for Becker, and we will be seeing more projects from him, of this we can be certain.
I will admit, a movie about an indentured hobo-samuraI does have some awesome comedic potential. If they could score someone like Bill Murray or Dan Akroyd as the business man I think you could have a very funny comedy on your hands. I would love to see a “straight man” try to deal with his elder samurai at work, on dates, and in a traffic accident. This idea has potential to be awesome, I simply hope they are able to do the idea justice, I am sceptical to say the least. I hope I am proven wrong again by Walter Becker.
