It looks like Castlevania has obtained a new director in Sylvain White. We get the scoop today from the icy-willed WEBMASTER at FILMJUNK!
Earlier in the year, we heard that Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil, Mortal Kombat) had left the project, which had me feeling pretty good about it. Surely nothing could be worse than Paul W.S. Anderson in the director’s chair, right? Well, today there comes news of a new director on board that has me pining for Anderson again. Sylvain White (I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, Stomp The Yard) is the person taking his place, although he will work with Anderson to rewrite his script. Last we heard, White was supposed to be directing an adaptation of Frank Miller’s Ronin, but I guess that will be put on hold. Personally I’m hoping we get to see some krumping vampires and werewolves on screen… sort of a modern version of Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Cameras will roll on Castlevania this fall in South Africa and Romania.
I have a few friends that are very much looking forward to this film. My friend Bill has been waiting for this movie for well over 10 years. He loves Castlevania more than most people love their children. I hope they do a good job with this movie, because I fear Bill will go “Jihad” if they muck it up. Sylvain White has not had much success with his other projects from the reviews I am finding on Rotten Tomatoes. I certainly hope that he is able to break this track record with Castlevania.
For Castlevania to be a good movie however, it will have to buck the “video game movie” trend of sucking horribly. WIth the game following the hero through Dracula castle till the final battle, it seems hard to fuck up. If they can make the movie akin to Game Of Death where you have different mini bosses until you reach the big boss, I think it would work great. I think modeling this film off of the Kung-Fu genre may be the best idea, this is not a drama, this is a dungeon crawl with increasingly tough opponents.
