Pirates First, Knocked Up Takes Second This Weekend

barbosa.jpgIt looks like Pirates ruled again at the box office this weekend. We get the scoop from the altar of movie news known as The Hollywood Reporter:

Buena Vista Pictures’ “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” continued to rule the high seas at the North American boxoffice during the weekend, when Captain Jack Sparrow and his crew plundered an estimated $43.2 million in their sophomore frame to bring the 10-day total including previews to a hearty $216.5 million. The worldwide gross for the Johnny Depp starrer stands at an impressive $625.3 million so far.

While the supremacy of “At World’s End” during the weekend never was in doubt, what did catch the industry by surprise were the fertile returns generated by Universal Pictures’ “Knocked Up,” which captured second place overall with an estimated $29.3 million from 2,871 venues.

I thought Pirates would win again, that is no surprise. What is surprising is how well knocked up did in such a difficult weekend. It knocked Shrek out of second which is no easy feat. Shrek was not in its opening weekend but I think most of us would of still pegged it at second place if we had to gamble. The word on the street is that Shrek 3 sucks, and I think people are in no rush to see it now.

Knocked Up was a fun film and it is a movie alot of people can relate to. Most people have kids and/or want kids and this is a film that celebrates (in a real way) the emotions and difficulties surrounding the event of birth. I think If I wanted kids I would of found this movie to be more enjoyable. I still liked it, but I am terrified about all things related to birth. For myself, hearing the phrase “I am Pregnant” is worse than hearing the phrase “Mr. Nagy you will have to lose that leg.” I have never had the urge to have children, and the desire to breed is something that i can understand for others, but could never even imagine for myself.

After a huge run of stinkers Knocked Up was a treat. I saw it twice this weekend and enjoyed it more the second time. I recognized by bias and was able to enjoy it more a second time around. I prefer 40 year old virgin, but this was still a quality comedy and worth catching in the theatre. I would not be surprised if this film makes roughly the same money next weekend based on word of mouth.
