Walt Disney Pictures’ epic adventure “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,” from Jerry Bruckheimer Films, landed in the global box office record books and laid claim to the biggest opening in industry history, with an unprecedented gross of $401,000,000 in its first six days of release, it was announced today by Mark Zoradi, president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Marketing and Distribution. This figure surpasses the previous record of $382 million set by the six day opening of “Spiderman 3” earlier this year. “Pirates” continues to please audiences around the world with exceptionally strong exit polls.
Domestically, “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” raised its weekend estimate to $156 million (including Thursday night showings). The film set a new record for the four-day Memorial Day Weekend with its gross of $142 million (including Monday estimates), the film surpassed the previous high of $122.8 million set by “X-Men: The Last Stand” in 2006.
Well we all new this film would make a lot of money, in the international market this project kicked ass. I have not yet met anyone that has loved this film, but I know reactions are mixed. I have no desire to see it again and wish I missed it the first time around. I am shocked to be honest that this film made quite so much for being such a long film.
I guess I should not be so surprised about the success of the film. Even though I was not a fan of any of the Pirates Of The Caribbean films I will admit that it has one very strong selling point – Pirates. Not enough movies about piracy exist so it is no wonder this movie has come along and cleaned up. We all have an inner pirate that is aching for fellowship with other swashbucklers; this movie fills a basic human need.
I have been let down by the blockbusters of the summer so far. I am looking forward to this weekend where I can watch knocked up and hopefully laugh my ass off. It has been a while since I have seen something I enjoyed in the theatre.
