As if we didn’t suspect Shrek the Third to dominate the boxoffice, but did you think we would find enough to talk about this three posts in a row? Well this is more about the future of Shrek and some of the contradicting thoughts floating around about the franchise.
According to sources, DreamWorks chief Jeffrey Katzenberg wants “Shrek 4” to be an “origin story,” a desire that goes a long way towards explaining why Jeffrey Katzenberg isn’t a screenwriter. “Katzenberg insists he always envisioned four chapters in the Shrek tale, and No. 4 will explore the green ogre’s origins,” is what we’re being told
So one of the big wigs at Dreamworks has his own vision for the movie, who also happens NOT to be a writer and then caps off this less popular direction with an assumption that he hoped there would only be four movies?
Its easy to say “I wanted four all along” when you have three under your belt. George Lucas originally wrote Star Wars to be 27 chapters too. Things change.
Are we to believe that he really had 4 movies worth of storyline picked out? And that a prequel was always there from the beginning to bookend the epic?
I don’t know. This sounds to me like some fluff. I think a prequel story is just a bad idea. The supporting cast that have been the staple of this franchise would have to be absent, and can this movie really carry itself before the turning point in Shrek’s life that makes him want to leave the grumpy solitude of his swamp?
I don’t think there even SHOULD be another, but you know Hollywood – if it sells, we get more. But to handicap yourself with an origin story just seems like direct to dvd to me.
