Shrek 3 had a good weekend at the box office picking up titles in the process. We get the skinny from the caves of Yahoo:
The big green ogre keeps getting bigger. “Shrek the Third” took in $122 million in its first weekend, breaking the franchise’s own record for best debut ever for an animated film, according to studio estimates Sunday. The latest adventure of the ogre shot past 2004’s “Shrek 2,” the previous record-holder for animated openings with $108 million.
Produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Paramount, “Shrek the Third” was the third-biggest debut ever, coming in behind the $151.1 million haul of this month’s “Spider-Man 3” and the $135.6 million gross of last summer’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.”
This no real surprise to me. Shrek was expected to do very well, the question was if it would beat Spiderman 3 or not. Peter Parker has won the battle of the opening weekend, but will Shrek overtake the spider in overall earnings when the dust settles? I still have to do my Shrek review, but I will say that both films have been a let down and at this point it will be interesting to see which lacklustre movie beats the other. So far I have been let down by the summer blockbusters. Will Pirates be added to the list or will it stand out a favorite? We shall see.
