Twisted Pictures To Release Film In Segments Online

images.jpgInteresting news coming out of the Twisted Pictures camp. It appears they are trying new and innovative ways to release film. We get the news from movieweb:

Twisted Pictures, the company behind all of those gory Saw films, is planning an Internet-only film that will debut exclusively online. According to Variety, the film will play out in daily segments that run about three minutes each.

The tentative title is The Internet Killer. It will first air on Break.com before hitting pay television and DVD. It is the first project of its kind. Other films have debuted on the Internet, but The Internet Killer is the first to be streamed as a series of shorts. Twisted’s Oren Koules says, “We are making this just like any other feature. It will probably be in theaters in some foreign markets. It will be on DVD and TV. The Internet will just be its first U.S. release.”

I think this is a great experiment. Having a film released in daily segments would be a lot of fun, in a way it is akin to the radio dramas of yesteryear. With YOUTUBE videos being sent to everyone daily through friends, it is now common place to check out a clip or two (or more) daily. To capitalize now on this emerging entertainment form is wise.

A horror film is probably the best type of movie for this first run. They can be made with not a lot of money, you can drive a lot of the clips with murder and if it is a success – sequels are no problem. If it is a hit money will be made on DVD sales and TV broadcasts, I am excited to see this thing.

What I would like to see in the future is a pick a path movie; where based on votes the movie continues in the chosen path the next week. If this film does well I think it is safe to say that others will follow. With the home computer becoming more and more central to viewing entertainment it will be interesting to see what changes happen to the industry in the next 10 years.
