Well the day has come New Yorkers. We talked about this a little while ago, the man known as Douche Bloombag has signed legislation to turn movie piracy from violation to misdemeanor. We get the news from the Caves of Yahoo:
With the summer blockbuster movie season just ahead, Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed legislation on Tuesday that upgrades film piracy from a violation with a $250 fine to a misdemeanor that carries up to six months in jail and penalties of up to $5,000.
The Motion Picture Association of America says more than 40 percent of bootlegged films are secretly videotaped in New York City theaters. The duplications are typically sold for mass reproduction or posted on the Internet, sometimes just hours after the movie has premiered.
So 40% of piracy comes from NY and FOX claims 50% comes from Canada – that leaves 10% for the rest of the world. I am glad legislation is being created on such convincing statistics, it allows me sleep at night knowing that lawmakers have the best interests of people in mind and not the corporations.
Way to go Douche Bloombag, fill the prisons with preteens and fanboys – teach us all a lesson. Let justice reign! When you can’t get adequate tech support – you will have yourself to blame.
I am doing further research to see If this law effects people: who tape in a theater, burn and sell, or if it is a blanket law that covers all piracy including file sharing. If you burn and sell or video tape in a theater – you are asking to get busted, so I have no problem if this harsher law applies to these folks. You are a heat score and it was only a matter of time. If it is a blanket law that will put file sharing internet enthusiasts on the same level as the street slinging dvd salesmen – then I remain furious.
