Disney Re-Releasing more classics in 3D

I don’t know if you guys have noticed, but the Lion King 3D made a nice chunk of change at the box office. Something about that movie, and the 3rd dimension led the film to be #1 for several weeks in the box office, even beating out new releases. Impressive. As such, Disney has decided to continue digging in the vaults for more classics that may be appreciated in theaters once again.

Throwing open its vault with unprecedented gusto, Disney has announced it will rerelease four of its classic animated films in 3D, including two Pixar titles — Beauty and the Beast, Finding Nemo, Monsters, Inc. and The Little Mermaid…
First out of the gate is Beauty and the Beast in 3D, which begins its limited theatrical run on Jan. 13, 2012…
Beauty and the Beast is followed on Sept. 14 by Pixar’s 3D update of Finding Nemo…
Pixar’s Monsters, Inc in 3D will debut on Jan. 18, 2013, six months before prequel Monsters University on June 21…
The Little Mermaid in 3D goes out on Sept. 13, 2013…

I definitely had to mark my calendar for a few of these and look forward to seeing some these classics re-introduced to this generation. Hell, using this tactic I’m not so sure Disney needs to produce any new animations for a while and they may be able to coast off of these re-releases.

I actually like what they’re planning and hope to see some of my favorite films from other studios get inspiration to follow a similar model. I’m holding my breath for Titan A.E. and the Iron Giant, what about you?
