Mark Wahlberg is talking about The Departed, and the trilogy that apparently is in the works; a prequel and a sequel will round out this movie, or at least that’s what is being said. The good people over at cinematical.com give us this
:Martin Scorsese’s The Departed may soon yield a sequel … and perhaps a prequel. It’s a natural progression, of course, when you consider that The Departed was based on the first film in a well-established series…Mark Wahlberg made to Empire Magazine: “They’re talking about bringing in De Niro to play a senator or a congressman….You know, the corruption obviously going deeper and higher up the ranks — reaching up the political chain. So it’ll be fun. And if it’s a success, they’re gonna do a prequel and bring everyone back….make it a trilogy.
So far Scorsese hasn’t said a word about join up for any other Departed movies but there has been buzz around this for a while. The fact that this movie is based on a book series means that the chances of more movies iare good, especially since the first one was so successful. I’m rather surprised that Wahlberg is talking so much about this before anything is set.
Would I like to see more Departed films? Actually yes, if it was done right, with good actors again I think this could work. The film has a few great elements that the television show The Wire shares, mainly, nothing is black and white. The bad guys have good sides, the good guys are twisted, nobody is perfect, no one is innocent. Match that with good writing, strong cast and direction and I think for sure a second or third film would be worth watching. The Godfather series was done right and this could be too. Of course it also may end up being a big pile of manure, just depends on who directs, who stars and if the script is good.
It’s a lot of work, but with this concept it is definitely worth doing right.
