I have remained neutral in the Civil War of Next Gen DVD Formats™ and chosen not to buy into either format until the dust settles. I just now got my DVD collection up to the standard beyond my impressive stockpile of VHS Movies. Looks like some bad press is headed Sony’s way with news of a Glitch in a major BluRay release.
The Sony Blu-ray high-definition version of Lionsgate’s horror flick The Descent plays fine on Sony’s new PlayStation3 game device, but those who attempt to watch it on an ordinary Sony Blu-ray player will see only a blank screen, according to reports that have emerged over the past few days on several websites devoted to high-definition video formats. A similar problem was reported with Pioneer Blu-ray players.
Oh how I would love to dance and say “haha” to Sony for this blunder, but I resist. This could have happened on any DVD release as well.
This just adds one more layer of doubt for the next gen formats. I cant say its justified, but this cannot spell good things for Sony’s reputation in this format race. Months ago, Dell computers (using Sony Batteries) were overheating to the point of combustion. Dell did some major damage control to spin that story (and issued an impressive number of replacement batteries free of charge) but it still lingers as a blemish against Sony and Dell.
Will this glitch disappear into obscure trivia in the history of High Definition DVD formats? Or will it negatively affect the BluRay reputation?
