Van Dyke Too Nice

When I was watching the trailer for Night at the Museum I was pleasantly surprised to see Dick Van Dyke in a supporting role. He is the nicest guy on film. But he is not so nice in this movie.

MSN News says:

The ‘Mary Poppins’ and ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ star plays the bad guy in new children’s film ‘Night At The Museum’ – alongside Ben Stiller – but director Shawn Levy has revealed movie bosses were not convinced about giving Van Dyke the role.

I guess after some 60 years in movies VanDyke felt it was time to take on a different role.

I dont think it is a bad thing at all to cast this “too nice” guy to play the baddie. In the trailer, he is made out to be the nice guy. Trustworthy, kind, helpful. But in the trailer, when he turns out to be aware of the goings on in the Museum, we see he isnt so innocent or trustworthy. Its his squeaky clean image that makes it such a tasty twist.

Maybe we will see more of VanDyke in more serious roles before his time comes. I dont think we will see much more from him (he is in his 80s), but at the same time he isnt done yet.
