United Artists and Tom Cruise are both continuing to take steps in a good direction with their new film Lions for Lambs staring Cruise Meryl Streep and Robert Redford who is also directing. The people over at yahoonews.com gave us this:
“Hollywood Reporter) – Tom Cruise, Meryl Streep and Robert Redford are set to star in the drama “Lions for Lambs,” which will mark Redford’s first directing gig since 2000’s “The Legend of Bagger Vance.” The project will be set up at United Artists, which was revived two weeks ago under new bosses Cruise and business partner Paula Wagner.
Because “Lions” is not a Cruise/Wagner production, Cruise and Wagner will function as supervising executives and will not take producer credits, sources said. The script was written by Matthew Michael Carnahan (“The Kingdom”).
This is SUCH a smart move by Cruise. When I wrote about United Artists and Cruise making a deal a few weeks back I had mused that it would be a great idea if Cruise started to go back to the type of films that were less about action and more plot and character driven. This sounds perfect.
The story surrounds three people; Redford as a professor in the U.S. with two students in Afghanistan. Cruise, who plays a U.S. senator and Streep as an investigative reporter following Cruise’s character.
What has me really excited about this movie is that it’s going to be the first film that Meryl Streep and Rober Redford have acted together in since Out of Africa and I can’t wait to see how their chemisty is on screen after all these years.
As for Tom, well, luck seems to be once again on his side, he is back in a role of interest, sharing the spotlight with strong talent. And to me at least, that is where Cruise shines best.
