Ok now I love quirky, creative men as much as the next gal but David Lynch has hit a new weird in his publicity stunt for the recently released Inland Empire. The good people over at cinematical.com give us this:
Defamer got word that Lynch was out on Hollywood Boulevard yesterday, sitting in a lawn chair next to a “For Your Consideration” sign promoting Laura Dern’s performance in Lynch’s latest film, Inland Empire … with a cow. Go look at the photo on Defamer. He’s got a real live cow on a leash, right there in the middle of LA. You’d think he was in Texas (where naturally we walk our cows every morning down major urban thoroughfares). Lynch tied in the cow and the movie with a sign reading “Without cheese there would be no Inland Empire.”
Wow! I have no idea how I would react to this if I was Laura Dern. Did he really do this out of some sort of peculiar love for her performance, or is it a dig because he thinks she’s turned into a cow? The plot for this movie is just as perplexing as Lynch’s publicity stunt.
Here’s the story: Married actress Nikki (Dern) is offered a role in a motion picture which is to be directed by Kingsley (Irons), Nikki’s co-star is called Devon (Theroux). Nikki’s role is Sue, Devon’s is Billy, but they end up winding into bed with each other. They’re calling each other the names of their characters in the movie. From here on, it is impossible to tell if Nikki is actually Nikki or Sue…
Lynch is out there, with his movies, with his life, with everything. This is a guy who has compared movies to ducks after all. So why not profess adoration with a cow?
Life is always more interesting when there are eccentric people bringing cows out into the open and using them to promote dramatic performances.
I haven’t seen anything by David Lynch in a while, so I may go out to see this new flick, even if it is just to feel like I’ve smoked something wacky. Plus I do love Laura Dern in pretty much everything she’s in (she’s certainly no heifer). And I think David does as well. He just doesn’t mind using her for publicity.
