Inside Man was a great movie, and like most movies in Hollywood these days, if something works once the creators will try and make it work again. The good folks over at slashfilm.com give us this:
Variety reports that Inside Man 2 is currently one of several projects Lee is considering for his next film. But the director has yet to officially sign on.
Lee and Inside Man screenwriter Russell Gewirtz are hard at work on a script. But the duo will not disclose any details, or even admit if the movie would feature the return of the original’s main characters, played by Denzel Washington, Clive Owen and Jodie Foster.
Inside Man made over $183 million worldwide in it’s 15 week run, making it the twelfth biggest film of 2006 thus far.
Financially speaking this is a good move, producer Brian Grazer is a talented man when it comes to picking hits for both film and television and if he has signed on the help it’s probably because it will be successful. And with Spike Lee involved in writing with Russel Gewirtz there is enough talent to pull something more out of this story. But I am on the fence for this one. As much as I liked Inside Man, I just don’t know if I want to see another. I liked the Italian Job too but I have no desire to back for seconds on The Brazilian Job either.
There is just something about caper films that, unless the characters are very unique or funny I am just not interested. With the exception of Jodie Foster’s character in Inside Man there is no one that I want to see again.
If this story revolves around some of the more interesting characters, like Foster’s I’ll be up for this, I also liked the back story about the money stolen in the Holocaust in the first movie, that could be explored more.
But if Inside Man 2 is just going to be another robbery in a more exotic location you can count me out.
