I LOVE superhero films. I truely do. Heath Ledger and I might not agree, but I am all about seeing my favourite superheroes broght to life on the big screen. Now Namor, the Submariner looks to be getting the Hollywood treatment. I dont know that this is a good thing.
Universal Pictures’ take will see a young man discovering he actually is a prince from Atlantis, with him turning out to be the key man in a brewing war between the underwater world and the modern surface world.
I also found an editted picture of The Rock as Namor, so now I think he would be perfect for the attitude and superiority Submariner embodies. Now Dwayne Johnson is my pic to play what is often credited as being the very first Marvel Superhero. But Namor has history. So why are they messing with his backstory?
This isnt right. Submariner was BORN Atlantean, and was RAISED Atlantean, and watched pollution rain down on his underwater empire from those damn dirty apes who soil his waters. And he fights back. The Ultimate Environmentalist.
I know the gig. They want to twist the character so that we become more sympathetic and can relate to him. But screw that. Submariner has always been about the fact that you CANT relate to him. This is the point. As humans we continue to deface and ignore the creatures of the seas while we pollute it. Now a man raises from the depths that embodies that human ignorance and says “Look at what you are doing to my world!” and kicks some ass.
Make a nice loveable industrial millionare the main antagonist, get us to relate to HIM and then have Submariner open a can and destroy half of his mechanical goodies, and slap some sense into him. Make Namor the badguy at first, the wrench in the works. When we see the movie twist to have Submariner as the real hero of the film, then the message will be made.
I should be writing comic book movies. But one thing is certain. You can’t mess with the source material. Oh sure, you can tighten things up, maybe twist a few minor details, but the Hero movies that work the best are the ones that stay true to the book.
Im going to get a tshirt made of that.
