Worried About Snakes On A Plane

Snakes on a Plane is finally upon us… and I’ve got to tell ya folks, my enthusiasm for this film has dropped about 4 notches from a couple of weeks ago. I’m going to see the film Thursday night, and I’ll give you my thoughts of it afterwards… but like I said, I’m worried.

You see… I’m the king of loving over-the-top, silly stupid fun That’s why I was looking so forward to Snakes on a Plane. I understand what they’re trying to do. I know they’re just making it ridiculous. Yes yes… I “get it”.

But even if you’re going for all of that… you STILL have to make it entertaining. And believe it or not folks… most film critics understand all the above stuff too. Ya there are some clueless morons out there… but most film critics aren’t these “out of touch” idiots that many people make them out to be.

So here I am… about 48 hours from finally seeing Snakes, and I’m worried for a couple of reasons.

1) No screenings for critics

There are some people who argue with me about this point whenever I bring it up… and then 100% of the time it turns out to be true. When a film refuses to show a film to the media in advance, it automatically means they know their film sucks and they don’t want the word to get out. Funny thing is we fall for it every time. With Snakes, people jump to it’s defense saying “It’s just that critics wouldn’t get it”. Uh huh… tell yourself that if it makes you feel better.

2) The Commercials
Folks… I’m sorry.. and I know I’m totally in the minority here and I’m going to get blasted for this. But the Snakes on a Plane trailers and commercials look stupid as hell. Not to mention… THE SNAKES LOOK TERRIBLE! They look fake as hell without even a hint of realism to them. For Shits sake, the snakes in “Snakes on a Train” looked better.

Snakes had been an AMAZING hype machine. I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. But eventually the hype passes, and all you’re left with is the movie. So is the movie going to be any good?

Maybe it will. Maybe Snakes will be a fun fun ride that I’ll go back and watch 3 or 4 times. All I’m saying is that I’m worried. And whether you agree with me or not, you have to at least admit there is stuff here to be worried about. Heck, I haven’t even mentioned the fact that this is being directed by the same guy who brought us Cellular, Final Destination 2 and Homeward Bound 2. Anyone else worried yet?
