First trailer for Keanu Reeves’ ’47 Ronin’

Keanu Reeves’ long anticipated (depending if you’ve known about it) film 47 Ronin is finally set to release this Christmas. It’s based on the true story of revenge by 47 samurai warriors in Japan during the 18th century. The story itself has been renowned as the most famous example of the samurai code of honor and has essentially become Japan’s “national legend”.

Since then the tale of the 47 ronin has had numerous adaptations through general story, opera, plays, and this most recent film adaptation which features a ‘fantastical approach’ where “witches and giants” exist. (Essentially think Lord of the Rings-esque with a tinge of Sucker Punch if it had an actual story.) Reeves’ version of the film directed by Carl Erik Rinsch (his theatrical debut) has been in production for sometime and was originally scheduled for release back on November 21, 2012. Around that time rumors had surfaced regarding reshoots and other production problems had halted the film in general. However now that the film has a clear December 25th realease date and the marketing push has begun, it’ll be curious to see if the film becomes the success Universal Pictures hopes for given the willingness to support the film’s $175 million dollar budget.

The trailer as well as official character posters can be found below, so check those out as well as the brief summary about the movie’s premise.

Keanu Reeves makes an explosive return to action-adventure in 47 Ronin. After a treacherous warlord kills their master and banishes their kind, 47 leaderless samurai vow to seek vengeance and restore honor to their people. Driven from their homes and dispersed across the land, this band of Ronin must seek the help of Kai (Reeves)—a half-breed they once rejected—as they fight their way across a savage world of mythic beasts, shape-shifting witchcraft and wondrous terrors. As this exiled, enslaved outcast becomes their most deadly weapon, he will transform into the hero who inspires this band of outnumbered rebels to seize eternity. Helmed by director Carl Rinsch (The Gift), 47 Ronin is produced by Scott Stuber (Ted, Identity Thief), Pamela Abdy (Identity Thief, upcoming Kill the Messenger) and Eric McLeod (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Austin Powers series).
