Aquaman Movie Anyone?

2 years ago I wrote an article on the rumours of an Aquaman movie being buzzed about. As you know, nothing really came of it, which in my opinion is a good thing since I don’t think Aquaman would work well in a live action setting on the big screen. I don’t mean that as a slight against the comic character at all… but he’s much better suited for the page than the screen.

However, even though a movie version never popped up, he has made 3 television incarnations in the last couple of years. He appeared on an episode of Smallville (which I love by the way… although the way they ended the season finale this year sucked), on Entourage, and in his own pilot show that was supposed to launch into a full Aquaman series. That never happened.

But all this media attention has the whispers starting up again. The good folks over at Cinematical give us this:

Apparently, according to four people familiar with the informal talks, Warner Brothers is interested in an Aquaman movie (apart from the recently squashed TV show), though they’ve denied any involvement. In a bizarre twist of life-imitating-art, uber-agent Ari Emanuel (whom Entourage’s Ari Gold is based off of) is at the center of the whole thing. While James Cameron will not be involved, Charlie’s Angels director McG is the name currently being tossed around.

So take that for what it’s worth. I still don’t think Aquaman would work on the big screen… not many bank robbers hit underwater vaults anymore for Aquaman to foil.

The ONLY way I could see this working (you’re going to hate this… and so do I) is if you made it a comedy. Make it more “Mystery Men” than “X-Men”. I don’t like it either… but it would have a better chance at not looking ridiculous than if they tried to pull it as a serious action/drama. Really though, it would just be best for all concerned if they just let it go.
