I became desensitized to standard “horror” movies at a pretty young age. By “standard” I mean the most basic slasher killer films. Jason, Freddy ect. ect. Don’t get me wrong, I still ENJOYED them, but then didn’t scar me anymore or creep me out in the least (a good example of that now is the new film “Hatchet”, which is a lot of fun, but doesn’t scare me for a moment).
But Chucky in Child’s play was a little bit of a different story. The killing didn’t freak me out…. but the fact that the dude was a doll. There is something inherently creepy to me about things that are supposed to represent innocence that then go whacky. Little kids in horror movies like The Grudge (Asian version) still creep me out for that very reason… and so, Chucky (being a doll) did too.
With Rom Zombie’s Halloween making some coin, you knew that it wouldn’t be long before the floodgates of horror remakes got thrown open full tilt… and it looks like Child’s Play may be the next horror remake up to plate. Our friend’s over at FirstShowing give us this:
While talking with David Kirschner this weekend, one of the producers of the upcoming John Cusack film Martian Child, he revealed that they are working on another Child’s Play sequel, but it would instead be a remake of the first Child’s Play.
First things first, David Kirschner is the producer behind all five of the currently released Child’s Play movies. He produced the first one and even the latest one, Seed of Chucky. Secondly, he also said that the same screenwriter who came up with the original Chucky story, Don Mancini, and who wrote all five of them is working on this one as well.
Now I think I’ll probably be in the minority here… but if you’re going to remake a property… I think you might as well bring in fresh blood to do it. I know most people will actually prefer the idea of the original writer doing the script again… but to me it then begs the question about why do it at all. If you’re going to revisit it, then bring in new eyes, a new imagination… someone who will look at it differently enough to warrant a remake. Otherwise just leave it alone as it is.
But what do you think? Would you be up for a Child’s Play remake? Is it odd to remake it when the franchise just had another installment come out like 8 years ago?
