I know most American Households mark the beginning of the Christmas Season with Black Friday, but for me Christmas doesn’t start until the animated How the Grinch Stole Christmas is aired on TV. Then its all eggnog and merriment. Dr Seuss is a staple of this Christmas season.
So I was pleasantly surprised when Dr Seuss’ Christmas classic was on TV and was partnered up with a less popular Horton Hears a Who immediately after it. I hadn’t seen this in quite some time and was pleasantly sucked back into my childhood for another 20 or so minutes.
Of course the Seuss double feature was not without purpose. There is a big screen version of Horton Hears a Who coming out soon and I came across the trailer for it today. It is computer animated but features Suess alumnist Jim Carey in the lead as Horton as well as Steve Carrell. The other voice actors might make you think this is an Apatow film with people like Jonah Hill, Dane Cook, Will Arnett, Seth Rogan, Isla Fisher, and Amy Poehler.
It looks incredible. The art style (despite being cgi) is still true to the original works of Seuss. And having the original animated tv short freshly lodged in my memory I am actually a little excited to see this.
