Toy Story 3 Will Be 3-D!

BuzzIt looks like the master smiths at Pixar have decided to loose Toy Story 3 as a 3-D feature! Leading up to the films release they are also going to re-release Toy Story 1 & 2 in the 3-D format! We get this news from the third dimension thanks to our friends at comingsoon:

The Walt Disney Studios is taking the latest advances in digital 3-D technology “to infinity and beyond” with ambitious plans to debut new Disney Digital 3-D(TM) versions of Disney-Pixar’s Toy Story on October 2nd, 2009, and Toy Story 2 on February 12th, 2010, it was announced by Dick Cook, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios. Both of these beloved animated features are being newly converted to 3-D in advance of the June 18th, 2010 release of Disney-Pixar’s Toy Story 3, which is being produced as a 3-D motion picture and will represent the state-of-the-art for the genre. Veteran Pixar filmmaker Lee Unkrich (co-director Toy Story 2) is directing.

Commenting on the announcement, Cook said, “We are committed to bringing moviegoers the best and most exciting 3-D movie experience, and we think they’re going to love seeing Buzz Lightyear, Woody, and all the wonderful ‘Toy Story’ cast of characters in an eye popping and dazzling way. John Lasseter and the animation team are putting all their passion and hard work into making this the greatest 3-D experience yet, and we’re excited to share their efforts with audiences everywhere.”

This rules! I love 3-D, and consider it the most enjoyable filmgoing experience. For me, nothing beats putting on wacky glasses with a bunch of strangers, as we enjoy the film and witness the screen crawl to life. I think the animation of Pixar will suit the medium well and champion a re-release of Toy Story 1 & 2 in the format. So many kids are going to see the films for the first time in the theaters, and having all 3 in 3-D in the same year! Wowza! This is a brilliant move by Pixar, they will rake in gobs of cash; we will be treated to a mountain of fun.

So many 3-D projects are coming down the pipe and I welcome them with open arms. I think the fad is hot right now and eventually may subside, but I will soak it in while the season is upon us. It is awesome to see Pixar on board the train, I would hazard a guess that their commitment to excellence may give us the greatest 3-D experience to date. I will be at all three films with glasses on, and hope this is the beginning of a long tradition for the animation house.
