A Queen Uncrowned

Queen Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), fueled by a warped interpretation of her late husband’s final words, believes Viserys intended for their son, Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney), to succeed him. Driven by ambition and a desire to protect her children’s future, Alicent rallies behind Aegon’s claim to the throne. This directly contradicts the established line of succession, as King Viserys had previously named his daughter, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy), as his heir.

Whispers and Schemes

The episode delves into the scheming within the Small Council. Hand of the King, Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), readily supports Alicent’s plan. He begins manipulating the council members and ensuring their allegiance to Aegon. Meanwhile, Rhaenyra’s loyal allies, including Lord Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) and Princess Rhaenys Targaryen (Eve Best), remain unaware of the unfolding coup.

A Coronation Cloaked in Secrecy

With the Small Council firmly under their control, Alicent and Otto orchestrate a secret coronation for Aegon. This scene is particularly poignant, showcasing the young prince’s fear and reluctance. He is thrust into a role he seems unfit for. The episode masterfully builds tension by contrasting the hushed, almost desperate coronation with the obliviousness and mourning within the Red Keep.

A Dragon in the Dungeon

One of the episode’s most captivating moments features a confrontation between Queen Alicent and Princess Rhaenys, who has been kept under guard after the king’s passing. Alicent attempts to justify her actions and pleads for Rhaenys’ support for Aegon’s reign. However, Rhaenys, outraged by the betrayal, delivers a powerful speech, exposing Alicent’s manipulation and the injustice done to Rhaenyra.

Escape and Revelation

The episode concludes on a cliffhanger, leaving viewers with a sense of dread and anticipation. Rhaenys, unexpectedly freed by Alicent, manages to escape the Red Keep, riding her dragon Meleys. We can only imagine the chaos that will erupt when news of Aegon’s coronation and Rhaenyra’s usurpation reaches Dragonstone, Rhaenyra’s stronghold. The stage is now set for the inevitable clash between the “Greens,” supporting Aegon, and the “Blacks,” rallying behind Rhaenyra, marking the beginning of the Targaryen civil war known as the “Dance of the Dragons.”

Fire and Fury Ahead

“The Green Council” is a pivotal episode in House of the Dragon. It marks the culmination of simmering tensions and sets the stage for the epic conflict to come. The episode shines with strong performances, particularly from Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, and Eve Best, who deliver powerful portrayals of women caught in the throes of a brutal power struggle.
