Ben Affleck mulling over Gatsby

I think Ben Affleck is one of the most fascinating guys in Hollywood at the moment. His performances in film as an actor are IMO typically the stuff of fodder, with few exceptions, unless he’s directing. Currently he needs to make a decision as this role could be one of those few exceptions.

Affleck is in talks to co-star with Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan in Baz Luhrmann’s THE GREAT GATSBY, which is all well and good except the shoot conflicts with when Affleck planned on filming ARGO, his next directorial effort…

…Should Affleck be able to make GATSBY, which seems likely considering that’s further along than his own film, he would star as Tom Buchanan, the millionaire husband of Daisy Buchanan (Mulligan) and nemesis of Jay Gatsby (DiCaprio) who loves Daisy. Maguire is set to star as Nick Carraway, Gatsby’s neighbor and the narrator of the film.

Man, that’s a tough decision. Leonardo DiCaprio is a hot commodity and being involved in a film with him has few detriments and In addition to that the role actually sounds pretty well suited for him. On the other hand ‘the Town’ was an awesome movie and Affleck has plenty of opportunity to continue to flex his directorial muscle. Decisions, decisions…

  1. I think Ben Affleck would be another great casting choice. Not only is he charismatic, but in recent years he has again proven he is much more than a rom-com actor (don’t get me wrong I love my rom-coms).

Baz Luhrmann is known for sending his viewers into distinctively stylised worlds with a hyped sense of reality, so I think it has the potential to bring this classic story to a new generation.

I can’t wait for this movie, Ben Affleck or not!!

  2. I don’t know how I feel about a remake of The Great Gatsby, but if anyone can make it work it’s Leo and Carey Mulligan. Whatever Ben decides to do, I’m sure it will be a good decision, because I think he’s good at making career decisions. After the whole J Lo debacle, he had the sense to lay low for a while and then come back with directing work. Pretty impressive.

  3. Affleck is a good actor, he just got alot of shit for “Gigli”. I personally forgive that one cause he was in a trance of the “Big Sweet Ass Syndrome”. that stuff can create wars!

His directing is getting better with each picture.
and I think he can hold more than his own next to Leo.

    my 2 cents.
